Back Pain Intensives

Back Pain Intensives are a concentrated series of Alexander Technique lessons that will reduce your back pain fast and keep it reduced. The Alexander Technique is one of the very few genuinely long-term treatments for back pain-- and there's research to prove it.

A strong back is a beautiful thing. You can easily forget how pleasurable having a strong body can be-- how simply moving about doing ordinary things can be a joy.

It's also easy to forget how good you look when your back is strong-- clear eyes, good posture, effortless movement and a beautiful fluidity and strength of movement. A good back is almost a synonym for confidence and self-worth.

Back Pain Intensives are not a temporary fix but a real investment in your own health and well-being, producing lasting results quickly. To go straight to the details, click here or call Nick Mellor on 1300 485 114.

"I Can't Be Bothered"

"I can't be bothered" is the reason many people don't seek help. They know something's wrong, but they won't act until they're forced to by pain that can't be ignored.

Some people express back trouble not as pain, but as low energy, tiredness and a feeling that everything's too much effort. It's hard to be motivated to do anything, including seek help for their back. They may not have a painful back, but there are many things they can't or won't do.

Back Pain, Anger and Depression

Back pain affects your mood, your ability to work and play. It has a huge effect on your quality of life. It's a slow-me-down, I-can't-do-that-any-more, I-feel-old kind of a feeling. It can wear you down without you realising.

Not surprisingly, many people with back pain are depressed or angry, and occasionally take it out on themselves and those closest to them.

It's to no-one's benefit that your back pain continues. Not your partner's, not your childrens', not your employer's and certainly not yours.

Don't Wait for a Crisis!

Vague, nagging pain and discomfort are all too easy to get used to. Things get gradually worse, but we barely notice, because the change is gradual. Perhaps it's a little harder to get up in the morning. Perhaps you feel a little more tired and grumpy at the end of a day's work. But backs don't stay the same, and smaller problems tend to grow into larger ones.

Sometimes a big back problem lands on you like a ton of bricks. You've heard of the straw that broke the camel's back? Sometimes a cough is all it takes.

It's much easier to sort out a back problem in the early stages. Your recovery will be much better, and much cheaper, if you seek help early. Plan ahead. Do something soon rather than wait for a crisis that may cost you your livelihood or your well-being.

Back Pain Intensives

Back pain treatments usually fix the problem, give you an exercise or two to do, then send you away. A few weeks later, you're back at square one, and have to come for another treatment. Alexander Technique lessons take a different approach, one focussed on long-term results: they show you how you've been causing your own back problems, and how to stop causing them. The result is a treatment for back pain that lasts. You not only get out of truble-- you learn how to stay out of trouble.

Back Pain Intensives consist of:

  • An initial questionnaire
  • 6 Alexander Technique lessons taken over a 7-10 day period, at a discounted rate
  • Exercises (extremely gentle) to take home, and a brief diary to keep for the week
  • A final questionnaire and debriefing
  • A guarantee: if your back pain is not still halved three months after your 6 lessons are finished, you can have 3 more Alexander Technique lessons at no cost. (YOU are the person who decides whether your back pain has been halved.)

Alexander Technique lessons are very gentle and involve no strength training, cracking or crunching of joints. Just light touch, verbal feedback and some homework. Lessons are fun, quick and you are totally involved throughout.

You will benefit from a small amount of regular exercise during the Back Pain Intensive. If you don't like exercise, please note that this is a symptom of back trouble, and should ease as a result of the Alexander Technique lessons.

How Can This Be True? Where's the Research?

In August 2008 the British Medical Journal published the ATEAM trial, a randomised, double-blind, controlled trial with a large sample size-- 576 people with chronic back pain of all kinds. The trial's authors found that:

  • 6 Alexander Technique lessons halved back pain, and it was still halved a year later
  • 24 Alexander Technique lessons reduced back pain by 86.7%. A year later, the average person's back is still improving, long after lessons have finished

Questions

"My back was injured in an accident. Surely this doesn't apply to me?"

People in the ATEAM trial were not chosen for particular kinds of back pain. Your injured back is likely to respond very well to Alexander Technique lessons. Many, many people have had Alexander lessons following car crashes and other spinal traumas, with extraordinary results.

"I've had back pain for 20 years. I've tried everything. Some things sort of worked for a while, but nothing lasted. Why should this work when nothing else has?"

Because you may have tried every treatment for back pain, but none of them really addressed your behaviour. That's like replacing your clutch but not learning to stop riding the clutch at traffic lights.

Alexander teachers don't replace clutches. But the difference between cars and people is that peoples' bodies are capable of healing on their own if they're given a chance. Often our habits don't give our bodies a chance. Remove the habit and the injury heals.

"I knew my back was much better when I was waiting at a bus stop one day. I suddenly realised I was enjoying myself, watching other people, drinking in the morning, feeling my body move subtly as I stood. I wasn't bored or uncomfortable. I was me again." -- Megan, 33.
